We have a lot of other old printers too, and it was tricky getting the right driver for some of them when we switched to Server R2, and all computers were running Windows 7. I don't remember having much printer driver trouble when upgrading everything to Windows 10 after getting working drivers on the server.

We had a dn in service as recently as a couple of months ago and had no problems moving from XP to 7 to It sat on the same print server hosting the same drivers for the past 9 years since I started here, and client machines simply installed the drivers delivered by the print server. The machine finally died so we took it out of service, but we had no problems with compatibility.
I guess I'm saying that yes, it can and will work without hassle -at least as long as you're hosting it on a Windows Server print server. We still have a significant number of HP Laserjet and s in use here. The is practically new compared to those! Most likely chipset and USB drivers have not been installed on the computer.
If possible use network connection of the printer instead of USB. Thank you all for the suggestions! I am only at the location where this printer is in use on Fridays, so I will try the suggestions then and hopefully one of them works! Something odd and wild. Way back we used that one as generic driver for quite a few HP models I was just poking at ya'.
But like you said, for the time being put into making that tech work It's probably cheaper and faster to just replace it with a new model! The solution ended up being to plug the printer in to the network.
I still don't know what the cause of the problem was, and I feel like I just worked around it by avoiding a symptom. I did test the printer with a Windows 7 computer and it fired right up and worked fine, so I know the USB interface is good.
